Is Nord Identity Theft Protection Worth the Cost?

Launched in 2024 by Nord Security (the makers of NordVPN and other security products), NordProtect is one of the most recent additions to the already crowded market offering identity theft protection services.

NordProtect takes a slightly different approach by providing minimal identity and credit monitoring while leaning heavily on cybersecurity and online fraud insurance coverage.

If you’re considering signing up for NordProtect, it’s important to understand its strengths and weaknesses — and how it could potentially leave you and your family vulnerable to online threats, financial fraud, and identity theft.

NordProtect Review: What’s Included in Nord Identity Protection?

NordProtect joins a large stable of security and online privacy products launched by its parent company, Nord Security. This includes NordVPN, NordPass, NordLocker, and (since a 2022 merger) Surfshark and Incogni.

To get started, users need to first create a Nord Account (if they don't already have one) and go through the identity verification process. This requires submitting personal information including your name, date of birth, address, Social Security number (SSN), and contact details.

Once signed up, you’ll be able to add additional personal information that you’d like NordProtect to monitor on your behalf. This can include your SSN, as well as up to five email addresses, phone numbers, and credit or debit card information.

NordProtect monitors significantly less personal information than other services — for example, Aura monitors over 130 unique pieces of personal data

Customers also get access to one-bureau credit monitoring services via TransUnion (with three-bureau credit monitoring for Platinum plan members only), identity restoration support, and multiple levels of insurance coverage.

NordProtect Pros:
  • Cyber insurance coverage on all plans with coverage against cyber extortion and online fraud
  • Steep discounts for two-year plans, if you pay the full amount upfront
  • Access to NordVPN and Incogni on Gold and Platinum plans only
  • Assistance from identity restoration case managers if you become a victim of identity theft
NordProtect Cons:
  • Limited identity protection when compared to other services, such as Aura
  • Only one-bureau credit monitoring on most plans, which could cause you to potentially miss spotting early signs of fraud
  • No home or auto title monitoring to warn you if scammers are targeting your larger assets
  • No phone support; only email and chat help is available

NordProtect claims to provide "all-in-one identity theft protection," but its core offering is relatively basic in terms of modern identity theft protection. Depending on which plan tier you opt for, you’ll receive:

  • Dark Web monitoring that sends near-real time alerts if the information you’ve given NordProtect has been leaked in a data breach. Platinum members also receive criminal record monitoring.
  • One or three-bureau credit monitoring to send notifications of suspicious activity on your TransUnion account, such as if fraudsters are trying to open new accounts or take out loans in your name. Recently, NordProtect added three-bureau credit monitoring to its Platinum plans.
  • TransUnion credit lock to help you block unauthorized access to your credit file (Gold and Platinum plans only). Platinum members also get financial account monitoring, which claims to monitor your financial accounts to alert you of new account applications and inquiries in your name, as well as authorized users. This appears to be different from Aura’s Financial Transaction Monitoring feature that monitors up to 20 linked bank accounts for suspicious activity.
  • Up to $ 1 million in identity theft insurance to cover eligible expenses and provide some reimbursements of lost wages due to identity theft.
  • Up to $50,000 in “cyber extortion” protection to cover eligible losses due to ransomware or other online extortion scams (after paying a $100 deductible). All plans also include $10,000 in online fraud coverage, while Gold and Platinum tier members get an additional $10,000 in cyberattack coverage.
  • VPN (provided by NordVPN) to hide your online browsing history and unlock international content — across desktop, iOS, and Android devices. Only available to Gold and Platinum users.
  • Incogni data broker opt-out to help remove your personal information from data broker lists and people search sites. Only available to Platinum users.
  • Malware breach alerts to let you know if your information has been leaked online by hackers — and if the breach occurred because one of your devices has become infected with malware.

NordProtect is a relatively new product, and its feature list is regularly changing and updating. For the most current information, it’s best to refer to the company’s official website.

How Much Does NordProtect Cost? Plans, Pricing, and Features

NordProtect offers three plan tiers with differing levels of protection — Silver,  Gold, and Platinum — and allows users to pay monthly or prepay (for one or two years) at discounted rates. The longer time period for which you pay upfront, the more affordable your initial contract period becomes. However, the opposite is also true.

NordProtect’s monthly pricing can be much more expensive than competitors that offer more features and protection.

For example, Aura’s all-in-one plan costs $15/month compared to NordProtect’s Platinum plan at $31.99/month (and doesn’t include critical safety features that Aura provides, such as more robust financial account monitoring, online privacy and device protection, and 24/7 phone support).

Here’s a breakdown of NordProtect’s plans and pricing as of January 2026:

Silver Gold Platinum
Monthly price $15.99/month $23.99/month $31.99/month
Annual price (one-year) $83.88/year $113.88/year $143.88/year
Identity protection Dark Web monitoring Same as Silver Same as Silver, plus malware breach alerts and criminal records monitoring
Credit monitoring One-bureau (TransUnion), plus monthly VantageScore® 3.0 credit scores and credit freeze assistance Same as Silver Three-bureau credit monitoring and yearly three-bureau credit reports and scores, plus financial account monitoring
Identity theft insurance Up to $1 million, plus $50,000 in cyber extortion protection and $10,000 in online fraud coverage Same as Silver, plus $10,000 in cyber attack coverage Same as Gold
Digital security None NordVPN and Threat Protection Pro (phishing, malware, tracker, and ad blocker) Same as Gold
Online privacy None None Incogni personal data removal service
Support 24/7 email and live chat — no phone support Same as Silver Same as Silver

Note: While there's no free trial available, NordProtect users do get a 30-day money-back guarantee on all plans.

The bottom line: NordProtect offers basic protection features with unique insurance coverage for cyber threats — but at a cost that’s higher than more robust alternatives, such as Aura.

What Are the Downsides of Using NordProtect?

NordProtect reserves most of its critical features for its highest-priced Platinum tier — which means many budget-conscious buyers may not be getting the level of protection they need. Price aside, the biggest issue with the service is that its features lack the depth provided by many leading services in the ID theft protection industry.

NordProtect isn't as robust as leading identity protection services like Aura, Identity Guard, and LifeLock.

Only one-bureau credit monitoring on most plans

NordProtect's one-bureau credit monitoring on its more affordable Silver and Gold plans could put your identity at risk or give you a false sense of security.

Since not all lenders report to the same credit bureaus, your credit file can differ between the major credit reporting agencies. By only tracking your credit file and providing credit reports from TransUnion, you might miss receiving essential alerts from your Equifax or Experian files.

Note: NordProtect recently added three-bureau credit monitoring — but only for Platinum users only. Platinum plan prices have also increased from $28.49/month to $31.99/month.

Limited identity monitoring

NordProtect's Dark Web monitoring feature only covers up to 10 assets in total — such as an email address, a Social Security number, a few credit card and debit card numbers, and a phone number or two. By comparison, Aura subscribers can monitor up to 10 email addresses alone and over 130 items in total.

NordProtect also leaves out important monitoring categories. It tracks criminal records found in your name (for Platinum members only), but it doesn't track sex offender registries or home and auto titles, which could lead to your missing critical alerts.

Unclear financial account monitoring

With the FBI reporting that bank account takeover fraud is on the rise, the lack of powerful financial account monitoring from NordProtect reflects a glaring hole in its services. While NordProtect now advertises financial account monitoring for Platinum plan members, it seems to be an extension of its credit monitoring services — monitoring financial accounts for new account applications and inquiries in your name, or new authorized users.

On the other hand, competitors such as Aura send real-time alerts about changes or suspicious transactions in your linked bank, investment, and other financial accounts.

“Credit freeze assistance”

NordProtect advertises “credit freeze assistance” as a key feature; but this service is just a link to TransUnion’s website, where anyone can manually request a credit freeze on their credit file. The Gold and Platinum plans now include a credit lock feature, but, again, only through TransUnion — leaving your other credit files at Experian and Equifax vulnerable (unless you manually freeze or lock them yourself).

Not available to customers in New York and Washington

It's unclear why people living in New York and Washington are ineligible for NordProtect coverage, but that's the reality for the 28 million or so residents in those states. New York and Washington residents are also excluded from the Identity Protection Benefits provided by HSB, the company that manages NordProtect's cyber protection and identity theft insurance.

No 24/7 phone support

NordProtect offers live chat and email support, but has no customer support phone number for subscribers to call. While identity theft victims may speak with dedicated case managers over the phone at some point, this is managed by HSB and not NordProtect.

Lacking device security features

NordProtect's Gold and Platinum subscribers receive NordVPN and Threat Protection Pro™️, but these digital security tools provide limited device protection.

For example, Threat Protection Pro™️ blocks ads, trackers, and malware in online traffic and downloads on desktops, but it's not a traditional antivirus software and doesn't offer any customizable or full device scans. It also won't detect or remove malware from your system, and it isn't available for mobile devices.

No family protection

NordProtect works fine for individual adults, but it doesn't provide a dedicated family plan or discounts for users if they want protection for a spouse, children, or other family members. There are also no family-centric features that most leading identity theft protection services include, such as parental controls, identity monitoring for children, and family insurance coverage.

No free trial

NordProtect offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, which promises users a refund if they don't like the service; but it's not as simple as a free trial, nor is it risk free. Money-back guarantees still require users to pay upfront, and refunds can take time. Users might also forget or make a mistake when cancelling, leaving them paying for a service that they don't want.

NordProtect vs. Aura: Which One Keeps You Safer Online?

NordProtect may be one of the newest members of the identity theft protection industry, but it's far from a unique service. There are several alternatives that offer similar or more features — and with more comprehensive coverage at more affordable rates.

Aura has been awarded the 2025 CNET Editor’s Choice for best identity theft protection along with #1-ratings from Security.org, TechRadar, and more.

Unlike NordProtect, which reserves critical safety features for its most expensive Platinum plan only, every Aura plan includes three-bureau credit monitoring, device and online safety features, privacy protection, 24/7 U.S.-based support, and more.

If you become a victim of identity theft, Aura’s Expert White Glove Fraud Remediation team holds Certified Identity Protection Advisor (CIPA)® certifications and can walk you through the steps of identity theft recovery.

The bottom line: Aura provides more protection at an affordable price. Aura doesn’t gate features behind higher-priced plans, either. Instead, all plans include the same high level of protection.

You should choose Aura over NordProtect if you want:

  • Three-bureau credit monitoring. Get alerts for all suspicious credit activity on your credit file at each of the major bureaus — not just TransUnion — without paying for NordProtect’s Platinum plan tier.
  • Faster fraud alerts. A 2025 mystery shopper survey conducted by ath Power Consulting found that Aura sends the fastest and most reliable credit security alerts in the industry.3
  • More robust financial account monitoring. Aura allows you to track transactions and activities within your bank, credit card, and investment accounts from a single app — and warns you of suspicious transactions.
  • More in-depth identity monitoring. Aura monitors more data (130+ pieces of personal information versus NordProtect’s 10). Aura also goes beyond Dark Web monitoring with home and auto title, high-risk transaction, change-of-address, and public records monitoring.
  • 24/7 U.S.-based support. Get round-the-clock support from fraud specialists when you need it by phone, email, or live chat.
  • Protection for your entire family. Get full-family identity theft and online safety protection, including parental controls, child wellbeing tools, and Safe Gaming features.
  • Robust digital security tools. Defend your devices from malware, scam calls, and cybercriminals with antivirus software, Safe Browsing, and privacy-focused tools.

NordProtect May Not Offer Enough Protection To Keep You Safe

NordProtect is a user-friendly service that offers some unique features, and it's backed by a familiar name in cybersecurity; but it still falls short as a stand-alone service in a field filled with premium identity theft protection tools.

For peace of mind in today's high-risk online environment, you need a service that moves faster than the threats you face. Aura offers robust credit and identity monitoring, strong financial account protection, and ironclad security for all of your devices and family members.
